Bob has been running Ackerman Horns for more than 35 years now. In this NEW 8-minute video, he discusses various aspects of the business. Be sure to check out all the new inventory on the products page. |
| BOB'S NEWS UPDATE With the addition of 14 consignment horns from the collection of Don Catwell, a well know Educator-Musician in the Northern NY area for over 60 years, the inventory list has grown both in stature and quality. Every horn from Don is a personally selected gem. Add 9 horns from another rural dealer-collector and my stock is way up from before. Just e-mail me if you want the list and I will send a copy. It’s the day of consignments with so many folks needing $ for their investments. Check out the products page. I personally am also working hard at promoting "Interplay", my new 3 disk classical CD that features all my compositional efforts to date since my Albany release in the early 2000’s. I am aiming at a European tour this year possibly including Russia. The new project is on MSR. Coming next year is another 3 disk project of jazz compositions. |
| BOB COMMENTS ON FINE DETAILING OF NECK TAPER
One of the main reasons for acquiring one of my custom finished horns is the detailing of the neck taper, which is finished with a custom made Tone Ring - the exact size being something I determine from my experience with measuring thousands of necks (I do the same thing with Clarinet barrels and bores). Over a period of 40-80 years a saxophone neck gets handled by repairmen many times for neck corks. Usually the neck is shoved onto a drum stick chucked in a vise and the cork is sanded to the right size. Most older horns have no protection. For example the Conn roll over will not stop the neck from expanding in this area, and other horns like Martin and Buescher have nothing at all in this area. Remember the saxophone is a continuous conical taper. Then too there is the situation where the repair person sees the neck out of round and uses a mandrel to put it back in round. Just take a caliper and measure the tip of your neck and then go inside as far as the pincers will allow you and measure. If it's smaller in there your neck has been opened and you are losing the special resonance your horn is capable of. The trick is to reset the sizing and get the taper back. First of all you need a shrinking tool which is something I had to have made for myself, as nothing is really commercially available. Think about all this the next time you take a chance with a horn you're not going to play before you purchase it. Every horn I detail has been attended to this way. - Bob Ackerman |

| SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE CLASSIC MARTIN LINE!
Thanks to the technology available with TenorMadness, I am now able to offer all my Martin Saxophones with an improved sonic ability. Martins were manufactured without a tone ring on the front of the neck. This means that most of them are out of shape at that juncture. For a couple of years I have been slowly converting my stock of Martins to necks with a ring at the tip. Sizing was done very carefully, and sometimes we changed things after the first ring was tried. Careful, detailed attention was also paid to making the shape better first before the ring was put on.
All the horns play with more focus and center to the tone, without sacrificing any of the original Martin qualities. If you already own a Martin talk to me about converting the neck. -Bob
